DOWNTOWN PARKVILLE ORDERED EVACUATED

The City of Parkville has ordered the city’s historic downtown closed beginning Tuesday morning at 2 a.m. At that time, nobody will be allowed into the area for at least 24 to 48 hours.

The area affected includes the entire English Landing Centre development and most of the area south of the train tracks.

English Landing merchants are busily working to move furniture and products out of their basement storage bins and many storefronts. Some officials believe that the water level may rise to the height of the train tracks, but in an official statement say they do not expect it to do so. While most of English Landing Centre is built on a 100-year flood plain and should remain just above the water line, parts of the garage storage bins dip about three feet below the tracks.Volunteers wishing to assist may register at Parkville City Hall.

Should water levels reach the downtown area, utilities will be shut off to all affected areas.

A flash flood is in effect until 7 pm Tuesday evening. If you come across flood water while driving in your car, do not attempt to cross it, say safety officials.
